The New York Times on Ventura Lambrate (and viceversa).

Well, we knew that here at Ventura Lambrate things went fine during the recent Fuorisalone, but we didn’t really expect the NYT to talk about it!

Here are the exact words, straight from Julie Lasky’s article:

Last year, a Dutch group organized the area as the Ventura Lambrate design district, attracting youthful exhibitors with a reputation for unchecked creativity.

This year, it was the must-see destination, despite the necessity of scuttling through a tunnel to get there.

(And, by the way, this is their last year’s article, mentioning the “13,798 Grams of Design” show held right next door, at the Lambretto Art Project…).

Congrats to all the people that worked hard to make this happen, the Organisation in Design team above all :-)

The free Wi-Fi provided to the Cowo Fuorisalone community @ Ventura Lambrate: the numbers.

Thanks to our Wi-Fi partners SimpleSpot (see our video-interview, in Italian, to one of the founders, who visited us on the first day of Fuorisalone) we were able to offer a free, fast and reliable connection to the Internet to all the guests who stepped in our coworking place in the Lambretto premises.

As a matter of fact, the Wi-Fi aspect of our initiative was definitely the most appreciated, leaving behind the use of desks (consider, in this respect, that many visitors would navigate and check mail directly on their smart phones, while sitting on a chair, or walking around).

SimpleSpot’s Martino Massalini just gave us the numbers of the connections made:

126 logins have been made during the 5 days by 32 users, who have overall viewed more than 7,000 pages.

Besides these figures, we would like to stress the fact that all connections went very smoothly, above expectations (for instance, no one of us would have believed that the signal would reach the nearby area of the camping… well, it did!), and that the fact that most users had non-Italian phones was no problem at all, thanks to perfect international standard of the SimpleSpot platform.

For these reasons, the Fuorisalone experience has been an excellent test for the platform recently developed by these Pesaro guys… well done SimpleSpot! :-)

Next door: Public Camping!

Adiacente agli ambienti del Coworking Fuorisalone c’è uno dei due Public Camping organizzati dal Public Design Festival (quello indoor, l’altro si trova sotto la tangenziale vicino a Rubattino).

La struttura che ci ospita è la stessa – il Lambretto Art Project – e i nostri ingressi sono appunto uno a fianco all’altro.

Entrando al Public Camping (dove è possibile dormire con 25 euro + eventuali 5 euro per il noleggio di una tenda, se necessario) il colpo d’occhio è notevole.

Oltre alle tende, nuove e disposte in modo razionale su un esteso piano in legno, colpisce la gradevole organizzazione degli spazi: ampia reception con sedie a sdraio, zona lettura, cucina comune con frigo e microonde, servizi e docce, tavoli per leggere o lavorare, megaschermo tv e… una piacevole pineta urbana.

Veramente accogliente, come testimoniamo i numerosi ospiti che, oltre al camping, hanno puntualmente usato il nostro servizio Cowo free Wi-Fi per controllare la posta, fare qualche chiamata via Skype, lavorare un’ora o due.

Tra l’altro, l’ottima connessione in Wi-Fi fornita a Cowo da SimpleSpot riusciva ad arrivare dai locali del Cowo fino all’interno del campeggio, dove per alcuni era più confortevole stare a navigare un po’… magari nel confort della propria tenda :-)

Intervista al nostro Wi-Fi partner: Martino Massalini di SimpleSpot.

Se c’è un protagonista dell’esperienza “Coworking Fuorisalone”, è lui: il Wi-Fi.

I visitatori del Fuorisalone sono in gran parte stranieri, ed alcuni ci hanno confidato il disagio provato nel non aver visto (online prima di partire, e poi dal vivo, una volta arrivati) nessuna rete di Wi-Fi disponibile in Italia.

Nè aeroporto, né zone pubbliche, nulla.

Quindi i complimenti ricevuti da Cowo per l’iniziativa “Free desk, Free Wi-Fi” si sono sprecati… molti degli utenti Cowo di questi giorni sono designer e professionisti che espongono nelle molte iniziative qui in zona Ventura Lambrate, e per loro è di fondamentale importanza poter verificare online gli sviluppi dei numerosissimi contatti personali che si prendono in questi giorni – a livello personale, ma anche e soprattutto professionale e commerciale.

Il constatare che in Italia navigare su Internet continua ad essere una cosa complicata e difficile non ci fa figurare bene, sullo scenario globale.

Anche per questo pensiamo che iniziative come quella di SimpleSpot HotSpot Wi Fi – Wi-Fi partner di Cowo per la settimana del Fuorisalone – siano da sostenere in tutti i modi.

Martino Massalini, uno dei fondatori di SimpleSpot, è venuto a trovarci il primo giorno del  Fuorisalone, e ci ha rilasciato un’intervista dove racconta il suo progetto di Wi-Fi libero.

Vorremmo ringraziare Martino e SimpleSpot per averci permesso di dare un servizio molto importante, e per aver condiviso in pieno lo spirito Cowo.

Nota bene: SimpleSpot funziona benissimo, abbiamo potuto testare anche la sua nuova funzionalità da cellulari non italiani, constatando che… non perde un colpo.

(Per chi volesse incontrare Martino, è quasi certa la sua presenza al CowoCamp2011 di sabato prossimo…).

From coworking to megaparty, and back.

Last night the premises of our Coworking Fuorisalone at the Lambretto (Ventura Lambrate design district) have hosted a super-party, with deejay set and an amazing, international crowd, coming from all over the city to celebrate the new Fruit of the Forest design magazine.

It was quite a storm that took away our quiet, efficient, Wi-Fi powered coworking situation, as described by this picture taken yesterday at 1 am…

…turning it into a high-volume, crowded and crazy disco floor (12 pm)…

…to come to its original function few hours later, ready for the first coworkers at 9.30 am (even though on temporary tables)!

Eventually, the Lago tables were put back in place before noon, with the help of the people in the space, so everything was back to normal well before lunch time.

What a tour de force!

The many wonders of Ventura Lambrate 2011 is no magic. It’s the careful work of a fine team.

Ok, we are here!

First coworker is already settled in a beautiful Lago desk (thank you friends!), Wi-Fi seem to be working, people starting to come in asking questions.

The four spaces offering free coworking – located in the Ventura Lambrate are, near Romolo MM station and near Via Palmanova – are all ready to welcome visitors with free desks and free Wi-Fi.

Welcome to Fuorisalone.

– 1 giorno al Coworking Fuorisalone.

La giornata è stata dominata dall’ansia. Mentre in tutto il quartiere Ventura Lambrate fervono i preparativi per la grande kermesse, in Monkey Business è tutto un infilare lavori per i clienti, telefonate, contatti, impostazione di poster e volantini, spostare coworker e tavoli, gestire le pulizie, organizzare gli spazi, ritirare il materiale stampato (in 4 ore), far sparire gli imballi delle scrivanie, consegnare un annuncio entro sera per un cliente, passare un brief, fare un titolo, pensare un po’ anche al camp, risolvere un post, comperare dei teli di plastica, rispondere a chi vuole fare il buon marketing, comperare il cavetto dell’iphone e le cartucce della stampante, salutare l’amico che passa a trovarci, non dimenticarsi il figlio che esce da scuola e che va a pallavolo e che torna da pallavolo.

Domani si comincia.

Il poster che abbiamo preparato dice “Welcome to Fuorisalone. Welcome to the Cowo coworking Community.”

La questione che non mi fa dormire è il Wi-Fi. Si naviga con la mia microsim (quindi non ho telefono per alcuni giorni, ma è il meno). Temo che non sia sufficientemente stabile e forte da reggere molte connessioni, ma di meglio non è stato possibile fare, anche se il supporto che abbiamo ricevuto è di prim’ordine (e nei prossimi giorni ve ne parlo).

L’organizzazione di Ventura Lambrate conta giustamente su di noi per il servizio di coworking e Wi-Fi degli ospiti del quartiere, e non vorrei dover mandare la gente nel Cowo di Via Ventura (a 500 m. di distanza) per poter navigare.

Vedremo.

Intanto Coworking Fuorisalone/Lambretto è diventata una venue di Foursquare. Un coworker mi messaggia su Facebook. Speriamo che queste scrivanie domani diventino un servizio vero. Cowo ce l’ha messa tutta, con tutti i suoi coworker che hanno aiutato, Laura formidabile come sempre, la community online che ci segue e ci incoraggia di continuo. E domani vi dico chi ci ha fornito questi bellissimi tavoli.

Vado telegraficamente (non per nulla, ma se ci metto troppo… arriva il giorno -1!):

Sedie: pronte, ma sporche.

WiFi: final test domani.

Spillette Cowo distribuite: due (Fulvia e Margo di Organisation in Design).

Ragazzi del camping urbano next door: incontrati (bravi, organizzati e simpatici).
